Diamond Head State Monument is the cratered remains of a 100,000 year old volcano. Early explorers saw the crater sparkle in the sun, and they mistook more mundane minerals for what they hoped would be a treasure trove of diamonds. The site has had cultural, military, and environmental significance for thousands of years.
