"[The] Grand Republic (launched in 2003, 52 feet wide/300 feet, 1595 gross tons, 6000 horsepower, speed 20 knots) can carry up to 1,000 passengers and 110 vehicles and was constructed at a cost of $14 million."

The current Grand Republic replaces an 1983 ferry of the same name and slightly smaller car-carrying capacity. That vessel has been sold to Cross Sound Ferry and presently operates under the name of Mary Ellen, running between New London, CT and Orient Point, NY, further east on Long Island Sound.
